1. Purpose
This policy describes how learner work is graded at Neponset University, how grade points are calculated, and how academic standing is determined.
2. Grading Scale
Neponset uses a letter-grade system with associated grade points per credit:
A (94–100): 4.0 — Exceptional mastery of course objectives.
A− (90–93): 3.7
B+ (87–89): 3.3
B (84–86): 3.0 — Strong mastery of course objectives.
B− (80–83): 2.7
C+ (77–79): 2.3
C (74–76): 2.0 — Adequate mastery of course objectives.
C− (70–73): 1.7
D (60–69): 1.0 — Minimal acceptable performance; not transferable.
F (below 60): 0.0 — Failing.
3. Non-Letter Grades
P / NP — Pass / No Pass: available for courses designated as Pass/No Pass.
I — Incomplete: assigned at the instructor’s discretion when extraordinary circumstances prevent timely completion. Must be resolved within thirty (30) days of the course end date or converts to F.
W — Withdraw: assigned when a learner formally withdraws from a course before the published withdrawal deadline.
AU — Audit: assigned when a learner has registered to audit a course. No grade points awarded.
4. Grade Point Average (GPA)
A learner’s GPA is the credit-weighted average of grade points earned in courses with letter grades. Pass/No Pass and Audit courses are not included in the GPA calculation. Transfer credit is not included in the Neponset GPA.
5. Academic Standing
Good Standing. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and successful completion of at least 67% of attempted credits.
Academic Warning. Cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or completion rate falls below 67%, in a single term. The learner is notified in writing and offered academic advising.
Academic Probation. A second consecutive term below the standards above. The learner must meet with an advisor, sign an Academic Improvement Plan, and may be limited to a reduced course load.
Academic Dismissal. Failure to meet the terms of the Academic Improvement Plan or a third consecutive term below the standards above. Learner is dismissed from Neponset and may apply for reinstatement after a minimum of one full term.
6. Grade Appeals
A learner who believes a grade was assigned in error or unfairly may appeal first to the instructor within ten (10) business days of grade posting. If unresolved, the learner may escalate to the Office of Academic Affairs within an additional ten (10) business days. Final appeals proceed under the Grievance & Appeals Procedure.
